Beach Personality: A Small Town Gem
Del Mar City Beach
Del Mar City Beach has a real local feel to it, an observation that was echoed by the people I spoke with there. One resident had this to say about the beach:
I would say this is a “generational beach”, meaning it’s fun for all generations. The swimming is great, the lifeguards are exceptional and it’s a very safe beach. If you’re a surfer, the surfing is okay, and if you like beach volleyball, you can play here. Even though the beach attracts a lot of local folks, there is never the kind of negative vibe that might make outsiders feel uncomfortable. I can definitely attest to that statement.
I was lucky enough to visit Del Mar City Beach on the day of the annual Powerhouse Paddle and Swim event, “an opportunity for youth and adults to participate in a challenging yet friendly ocean competition”. All the participants seemed to be having a lot of fun in the various events that included swim and paddleboard races.
The beach itself is narrow, but long with very fine-grained and soft beige sand. There was a bit of natural debris at the tideline and the shoreline is good for walkers and runners.
