Galveston is a coastal city in the Gulf of Mexico located on Galveston Island in Texas. It’s about an hour’s drive from Houston depending on traffic.

Weather

Galveston’s climate is classified as humid subtropical. That means it’s relatively mild year round and positively hot in the summer with temperatures regularly higher than 90 °F (32 °C). When you factor in the high humidity, the best place to be is the beach.

On the other hand, January’s highs average over 60 °F (16 °C). Fall and spring temperatures are somewhere in between.

Hurricanes are a threat during the annual summer through fall hurricane season. In fact, in 1900 it was the site of the deadliest hurricane in US history. At least 8,000 people died and many more were injured.

Galveston Island is considered a beach destination for good reason. It has 32 miles of beautiful Gulf beaches. There are 6 beach parks and 44 beach access points. That means you’re never far from laying your towel on a perfect stretch of Gulf sand.

The 6 beach parks — Apffel Park, Stewart Beach, Dellanera RV Park, Pocket Park #1, Pocket Park #2, and Pocket Park #3 – all have:

  • Handicap accessibility and/or a beach wheelchair(s) available (except Dellanera RV Park)
  • A pavilion with snacks and/or showers (except Pocket Park #1)
  • Public restrooms
  • Non-motorized boat launches
  • Lifeguards on duty seasonally
