Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo

The water at Seven Seas Beach is generally very calm – due to an offshore reef – making it a good swimming beach. One of the interesting things about Seven Seas’ offshore reef is that you can see it from shore. Take a look at the photo (the one with the buoy in the center) looking straight out towards the ocean. Where are the waves breaking? Not on the beach.

One way to determine if a beach has an offshore reef or sandbar is to look out to the ocean from the beach. If you see waves breaking in the distance while between the breaking waves and the sand the water is calm, that indicates an offshore reef or sandbar exists like at Seven Seas Beach. The islands of Tahiti provide an exceptionally dramatic example of this natural phenomenon.

While all beaches in Puerto Rico are technically public, very few offer public amenities like bathrooms, lifeguards, and parking lots. The ones that do have these things are run by Puerto Rico’s Parques Nationales and are designated Balnearios. In addition to the typical public amenities provided at Puerto Rico’s Balnearios, Seven Seas Beach has camping facilities. If you want to save some money and stay on a beach too, you can do it here. Call 787-622-5200 for a camping permit.
